The more I hate an anime the more spoilers there will be.ĪRT: There is no problem with the art but this is pretty hard to mess up these days. So, having explained this lets rip into this anime shall we? Just a heads up: There will most probably be spoilers. It annoys me to be sure but I will not rant about it. Things like this are normal here and I'm pretty much fine with it. Yes, it is stupid but it is a stupid that I'll allow. In this case I'm not talking about a 90 pound girl catching a multi-ton cruise missile and throwing it back. I can't ignore the stupid shown in the anime and this is a problem as most anime are very stupid indeed. There is a reason for this though and it has to do with the fact that I can't turn my brain off when watching anime.

If you have been reading my reviews than you may have noticed that I tend to rip the anime a new one. Best taken in context as an intro to “The Eden of Grisaia”. This show grants a lot of background information about the main character but, otherwise, has few standout moments. If you like the concept then you will wish to see the story through to the end. How he turned into a young man that all the girls adore at High School is hardly plausible, but this is just a silly fantasy in the end. Young Yuuji is emotionally traumatised by his parent’s death and is taken in by some weirdo who forces him to dress as his sister. There were some genuinely dark moments in Season One and this vibe continues with a lot of violence, a rape scene, suicide and so on. That isn’t to say that “The Labyrinth of Grisaia” doesn’t have its moments. As it only looks at Fuuji’s story it lacks the extra dimensions that made the first show so watchable. However, “The Labyrinth of Grisaia” reverts to type and lacks some of the magic we saw in Season One. This was particularly well-earnt considering it was based upon visual novel.

It worked really well and was worthy of praise. We rated Season One pretty highly due to the novelty of the story line that blended together an original main protagonist character with a Robert Ludlum-inspired story set in a High School harem scenario. We learn more about his family background, his sister, the demise of his parents and his subsequent career in special forces as a child soldier. As such it is indistinguishable from Season Two in that it covers Yuuji’s backstory. So, this isn’t really an OVA it is just an extended episode one to Season Two. This makes sense when you realise that the opening story-arc to Season Two (“The Eden of Grisaia”) consists of “The Cocoon of Caprice” I, II, III & IV. It slots in exactly at the end of the first season and oddly enough, for a separately-named OVA, it also has an episode name “The Cocoon of Caprice 0”. Eight Bit studio churned out this sequel OVA to “The Fruit of Grisaia” hot on the heels of Season One in 2015.
